Peer Pressure
In today’s society, teenagers are forever influenced by the media. Stick-thin celebrities are currently flaunting the latest outfits, jewelry, and technology. We are aspiring to look like these models, and young girls are now depriving themselves of food and nutrients that help them grow and mature properly, to look as if they stepped off of the cover of “Hello” or “Now” magazine.
Teenagers are facing more obstacles than ever before, and sometimes, privacy and space are what we need to enable us to learn from our mistakes and experimentation.
Nelson Mandela remains in hospital
10 June 2013
Nelson Mandela remains in hospital after being admitted for a lung infection. His condition is still being described as "serious but stable". Mr Mandela, 94, was admitted to a Pretoria hospital early on Saturday.
As the world's media gathered in Pretoria, where Nelson Mandela is being treated for a recurrent lung infection, there's been no fresh information about his health status.
Whilst the absence of any official updates did little to help the speculation, many took heart from a visit by Nelson Mandela's daughter Zindzi, who said that her father was well and a fighter.
Although Mr Mandela has rallied in the face of past health scares, there is an increasing acceptance among many South Africans that the former president is frail and not immortal.
Commentators are now daring to talk of a time without Mandela, urging South Africans to cherish his enduring achievements: an end to racist white rule and a constitution that is the envy of the world, as much as the man himself.

Longer school days, shorter holidays!
Most students around the world would say that they spend far too much time at school, when there are loads more important things to do, like watch TV, update your Facebook status, or maybe even read a book! But as the UK education Minister considers shortening holidays, and lengthening school days, it seems right to look at the loopy lessons from around the world!
The school day in Brazil runs from 7 a.m. to noon, and students typically go home at noon to share lunch with their family. Lunch is the most important meal of the day in Brazil. Breakfast? Why bother?
This is the reason, says Michael Gove that ‘Asian schools are more successful, and we need to follow in their footsteps.’
This is not just problematic for students, though; this will also have a great effect on the lives of teachers! If this goes forward, they will have less time with their families, and have to spend more time preparing for longer lessons.
In a poll, it was revealed that 47% of voters like you wanted to keep the education system the same. 24% of you wanted to have no holidays, but only attend school 3 days in a week, 10% thought that going to school 6 days in a week would be great, and the rest simply wanted to be home schooled. No-one wanted the same as Michael Gove!
Miss Francis, the head teacher at the Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School said, ‘My personal view is that schools should have the flexibility to adapt the length of the school day to suit the needs of their students and location. As many of our students have quite lengthy journeys to school I would not want to lengthen our normal school day. Holidays provide students and staff with the chance to re-energize. I feel it is important to try to retain the 5 or 6 week summer holiday.’
So, with so many people opposed to Gove’s plans, will this go any further than just an idea? We will have to wait and see!
Social Networking:The Hidden Dangers
It seems that every ten-year-old kid you see has a mobile phone, some sort of iPod and an account on a social network. The question is why?
At first it seems that a social networking site is great fun, you can play games and chat with your friends to your heart’s content. It makes it 100 times more easier to have a chat with that aunt that lives across the country, or that friend on holiday But as you grow older the point of a social networking site changes dramatically, what you thought was fun and harmless can become like hell.
Social networking sites can be dangerous in many ways; but it’s all hidden. What you might think is a harmful comment may, in extreme circumstances, lead to someone’s death. Or what you thought was a harmful picture of yourself might lead to rape. Or what you thought might be a fun way to make new friends by posting your address or phone number might lead to murder.
And to make matters worse, many comments are done in secret, which means the bully can never be found, unlike in a playground where it is blatantly obvious.
We asked an acquaintance their views on this particular topic:
What are your views on social networking sites?
I think the sites can be dangerous. A lot of the time they cause more hassle than their worth. But I am fond of them; they make it easier to connect with people. And honestly I think I wouldn’t even be here without them. I am able to express myself; they help a lot of people like that.
Why do you think such young kids are eager to join up?
Kids want to be older. They see young adults using these sites and want to be like them. They want to be a part of the latest craze.
Everyone knows that it can cause a lot of stress to anyone, what do you think can be done to help?
I definitely think that there needs to be tighter restrictions on social networking sites. People can get away with too much.
We believe you own your own tumblr account which enables people to express their thoughts and troubles so they can get help, can you tell us a little bit about that?
Spark will one day return but as for the moment I just don’t have the resources to keep running it. Through tumblr I've found that so many young people rely on the internet to express and release their emotions in a healthy manner. Tumblr’s amazing for that. People really listen. In a sense that website saves lives and that’s an amazing thing.
So in future, think twice before you join the newest social network on the web.
If you think anyone one is a victim of cyber-bullying try to help them because it’s a difficult road to go down.
